“The Footballerinas” is yet another underdog story: a group of misfits from different backgrounds (and different sports) who come together to create a football team of their own in their small town.
That they’re trying to create an all-girls’ team is only just the icing on the cake.
What the Footballerinas is about:
- THE POWAH OF FRIENDSHIP!
- The power of coming together despite differences
- DREAMWORK MAKES THE TEAM WORK!
- Knowing how to navigate the messiness that is adolescence?
What the Footballerinas is NOT about:
- Girls are all powerful, all knowing and they should not be criticized because they are perfect angels (every teenager is messy in varying ways; some worse than others…)
- Girls are perfect athletes (sports is HARD!)
- Dumbing down everything because we need kids to remain stupid

For the Footballerinas, NAAN plans to create a full black-and-white toned comic trade paperback. She wishes to prove that B&W comics can stand tall in the larger market, and the fact that they’re not taken as seriously as colored comics in the US (where B&W has had its respect in the day, through underground comix and the 90s indie explosion) is an insult to other comics such as Japanese comics, who sell well in the US (and internationally) despite being in B&W. This “color vs B&W” dichotomy is made-up, and she wishes to prove it.
It is also much easier and faster for her to work in B&W, due to the amount of work needed with coloring comic pages.
NAAN’s style is heavily anime/manga-influenced, as seen in the character page and chapters page.
